4th place in GC (8th in the TT, 3rd in both the RR and Crit) at the San Dimas Stage Race in the CAT2 only category
Background:Despite the typical around-the-neighborhood riding I did from an early age my cycling officially started when I was in high school and my father bought me a mountain/utility bike for my 16th birthday. I thought it was great at the time and I started riding 2-3 times a week for an hour or two at a time. A year later, my uncle Jim challenged me to lose weight and to compete in a triathlon with him. I graciously accepted his offer. Obviously, the utility bike wasn’t really the right tool for the trade, but fortunately my father had an old 1983 Bridgestone touring bike that fit the bill. So, after a little more training I competed in my first triathlon and at 17 years old I won my age division. I was hooked.
Fast forward 6 years after finishing college and putting on way too much weight by going to the gym as often as most people watch TV, I bought my first road bike. A 2003 Felt F50 with Ultegra 9 and a triple. Now I was even more hooked. After a year of getting dropped continuously from the ‘A’ group at the noon rides in Livermore, I finally decided to race. I got the inside scoop from the fast guys and traded my tiny front chainring with my brother so that I could officially “look fast.”
After 5 races as a CAT5 with an average finish of 2.5 I decided that cycling was my most natural sport so I gave it my full attention. It took me a year and a half to figure out that my strengths were sprinting and time trialing and after 3 years of racing my biggest highlight thus far was the San Dimas Cat 2 4th in GC
Goals:
Get my CAT1 upgrade and to complete a whole season without getting hurt, sick, or having work get in the way.
